Eye of the Dolphin Movie Reviews: What critics are saying

Eye of the Dolphin opens at a theater near you on Friday, August 24th:

There's a pleasantly dreamy quality to much of Eye of the Dolphin....underwater lensing is beautiful throughout...persuasive performances...abounds with mellow color and local vibe.
Joe Leydon
Variety

A strength of the movie is the portrayal of committed inter-racial friendships and a romantic relationship.

The Movie Mom at Yahoo! Movies

I give it a 'A' for Ah-dor-a-ble.
Carly is totally believable. The beautiful water, pristine beaches and amazing animals in the film are pretty powerful.
Girl's Life Magazine

More engaging than Whalerider.....Eye of the Dolphin is a welcome addition to the late-summer movie-release slate.

The Heart of the Movie: Communication

The real issue that is dealt with in the film is communication. Communication and its difficulties are central to the storyline. The research into communication with dolphins serves to sets the stage for the challenges that the characters face in their struggles to hear and be heard.

Eye of the Dolphin has something that’s lacking in far too many films, especially ones aimed at a family audience.
It’s got authentic heart.

There's real heart to be found in the story.

Involving performances and storyline, the film contains a pretty musical score and lovely cinematography. The themes concern bringing family together, learning to listen to others, keeping our hearts open.

Father Daughter Movies: No sentimental sap here

Family films tend to suffer from an overabundance of sentimental sap, but this delightful drama about a father and a daughter rediscovering each other avoids that fate without giving up any of its sweet gentleness.

PG-13 Rating: Completely Inoffensive Movie

Despite the PG-13 rating, this film is very family friendly.

Transcends family-friendly cliches..
Tampa Bay Weekly

In an act of inexplicable randomness, the MPAA has slapped this completely inoffensive motion picture with a PG-13 rating. I suppose it has to do with the fact that Alyssa smokes a joint at one time and gets drunk at another, but the scenes in question are less graphic than the entertainment news reports about Lindsay Lohan.
There's no cursing, nudity, sex, violence, or much of anything else. Eye of the Dolphin is appropriate for young audiences. In fact, it's intended for them. The PG-13 is unwarranted because it's likely to lead potential viewers to believe the content to be more mature than it actually is. This is a squeaky clean family film.

ReelReviews

While this is a family film, it’s not one that’s particularly well suited to young children. Many people use the term ‘family film’ as a euphemism for ‘babysitter film’ for young kids. And this is not one of those. The story concerns a 14-year-old girl who’s struggling – and consuming drugs and alcohol in the process. It’s about difficult issues between a young teen and her father. It’s a movie for parents and their older kids to watch together and discuss. In short – this is a true family film.

Carly Schroeder  / The Acting - 'Gracie' actor has a perfect performance for tweens and teens

This fantastic film is in theaters this summer. Do yourself a favor and see it.
Teen Magazine

Young audiences will enjoy her journey from surly to empowered, and as countless visitors to Brookfield Zoo can attest, there's nothing like watching dolphins. So a star for Schroeder and a star for the title players.
Maureen M. Hart
Chicago Tribune staff reporter

An effective performance by leading actress Carly Schroeder. Tween and teen girls will identify with her and the character she plays, and this makes the movie targeted strongly at them.

Carly Schroeder, on screen recently as the determined soccer player in "Gracie," has the talent to pull off the inevitable transition...from troubled teen...
Larry Ratliff
Express-News Film Critic

Schroeder...who has awesome charisma and seems natural whether she’s playing an angry over-made-up city girl or frolicking with the dolphins in the Caribbean. She buys this movie all sorts of credibility, a remarkable accomplishment for someone who had just barely turned 16 by the time the movie premiered in the Bahamas.

The Dolphins: Playful and Intelligent

Needless to say, the dolphins end up playing an important role in the proceedings.... For the purposes of this movie, the dolphins are (a) completely safe, (b) as smart as humans, and (c) capable of doing magical things. They are captured nicely on film by cinematographer Guy Livneh, whose camera does justice to the beauty of Grand Bahama Island. Some of the little shots - like one of a crab scuttling across a rock - are the most memorable and add color to the production.

ReelReviews

Eye of the Dolphin is a fine family film that once again makes it clear that animals can often play the role of mediators in reconciling human beings who are uneasy with each other and don't know how to connect.

Underwater Cinematography: Stunning

The movie...shows remarkable production value for something so under-the-radar. The underwater scenes, shot by an alum of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, are spectacular, and lend the movie much of its credibility, simultaneously fantastical and familiar, floating and swooping through undersea landscapes, and making us forgive any silliness to follow in the upcoming above-ground scene.

Directing by Michael D. Sellers: Glad you paid to see it on the big screen!

The Bahamanian culture is also fascinating, and director Michael D. Sellers does a great job of capturing the beauty of the Bahamas, the ocean, and the dolphins. This is the kind of stuff you end up glad to have paid to see on the big screen.
